A.J.C. AUTUMN MEETING, A MAGNIFICENT RACE FOR THE CUP. Stdsbv, March SO. The Auetrallan Jockey Club was again favored with splendid weather for the second day of the autumn meeting. Sydney Cup, Jones' Highborn .. . < ■ ■ i ■ I Maitland’s Greygown ~ ~ , ■ 2 Chaste's Yowl .. .. .. ~ 3 —Cardigan, Muriel, Little Bernie, Utter, E.K., Wandsworth, Helene, Pretty Kate, Southerly, Buster, and Lancer alio ran, The belting.tree 3 io 1 against Highborn and Little Bernie, 4 to 1 Greygown, 6 to 1 Helene, 10 to 1 Muriel, 14 to 1 Southerly Buatsr, 20 to 1 Lancer, 25 to 1 E.g. and Yowl. From a good start Cardigan, Utter, and B.K, went to the front, vith Southerly Buster, Little Bernie, and Yowl two lengths away, after whom came Muriel, and Tridentine, Greygown being last but one. The pace at the start was only moderate, and aa the field swept into the straight the first time round B.K. was in command, and led passing the stand by half a length, with Yowl and Pretty Rate second and third, followed closely by Utter, Little Bernie, and Tridentioe. A gap separated Helene from the other horses, while Grevgown gnd companion Lancer were atill in the rear. At Oxenhain's Yowl raced up to find jho

went on in front, with Pretty Kate and Southerly Barter fourth, after whom came Highborn. At this time Ramage shook up Greygown and went up to the leading division at the sheds, E.K. having out signs of distress aud giving way to Yowi, who took thn fit-id along, followed by Little Bernie, Southerly Buster, and Highborn together. Yowi entered the straight foil of running, a length ahead of Little Bernie, Pretty Kate and Highborn being close up, Greygown was partly blocked by the leading division, and was compelled to take an outside running, A great race now took place in the straight between the horses Yowi, Pretty Kate, Highborn, Muriel, Little Bernie, and Greygown, but opposite the stand Highborn, Greygown, and Yowi drew out from the others, and a desperate struggle to the post resulted in a half head victory for Highborn, amidst the greatest excitement. Only the same distance separated the second and third horses. Little Bernie was fourth ; then came Southerly Buster, Wandsworth, Lancer, Pretty Kate, Muriel, Cardigan, Tridentine, EK.. Helene, and Utter, in the order named. Tbe time was 3 min 374 sec.

The Sydney Mail wrote of Highborn after the weights came out. Just prior to going to Melbourne Highborn rattled home in front for the Anniversary Handl cap, and that performance in some measure prepared us for what was to follow. His first performance at the recent meeting was in the Brunswick Stakes, when he carried 8.4, beating Wilga, Havilah, and 10 others, and then in the Australian Cup, wherein he carried 86, including a 14lb and ran tbe winner Vengeance, 713, to a head. What a certainty that event would have been for him had he not incurred the penalty. His party must have been brimful of confidence, even though he went to the post under such disadvantages, for they backed him so freely that at the last he hardened down to such an extent as/to leave the paddock an | equal favorite* vtith Megaphone, who was the popular idol. And what a great race ,he ran ? It was almost cruel that he should I have been worried down in the last few strides, and beaten by “ a rod in pickle.” The flattering burden of 9.3 h is been deemed his portion here, and even at that his chance must be a good one.
