At the Dunedin City Court J*mM Burney and Roderick McKenzie, alias O’Brien, well known to the police, were committed for trial for sticking up Mr Fairlie, a baker, near Outram, in broad daylight, and itssling his watch.

At the Conference of the Federated Association of Master Printers at Dunedin, it was unanimously resolved—That in the opinion of this Council the Government should, as fir as possible, distribute the printing required amongst the private printing houses of the colony by tender, the competition of the Government Printing Office being unfair towards local industry in which a very large amount of capital was invested, and which affords a- large measure of employment; also, that the printing and publication by the Government of such works as Law reports, transactions of the New Zealand Institute, Bir W. Bulller’s Book of Birds, etc , is a distinct interference with the printing trade uf the colony. It was also agreed to express sympathy with the principle of a combined Board of Conciliation.

At Christchurch last week a deputation of unemployed, accompanied by the Mayor and several Members of Parliament, waited upon the Minister for Lands, who said he would bring in a measure next session to enable land to be acquired for and at once to open up for small settlements such suitable land as was in the possesion of the Government; and he would consult with the Minister for Public Works with a view to providing employment for the mon out of work until the settle* ment scheme was in operation. He promised to provide a free passage for a representative of any association of not less than 25 men willing to take up farm homesteads, who might bo sent to select the land.
