A Sailor Narrowly Escapes Drowning
RESCUED BY HIS MATE. Two Bailor, on the ketoh Venus were going back to their veaiel shortly after tan last night. The ketoh ia moored near tha viaduct, and a, the mates were crossing th. .teamer Noko (which was lying at the wharf) to get aboard their dingy, one of them, named John Pickard, fell between the Nuko and th, wharf. The other man heard the ,p!a.h( and rushed to the spot, calling out "Jack, 1 ' but getting no answer. Thea he caught Pickard's hat floating down the river,'but' could not see his mate. Striking somematches—it was very dark—he noticed Piokard being swept down by the rapid current, bis head being underwater. The mate at 01100 jumped over, and quickly got » along by tho piles of the wh,rf, and got hold of the drowning man. After much difficulty he succeeded in getting the man on to the wharf. Assistance was soon obtainable, aud Pickard, who bad swallowed. . a lot of water, was conveyed to the Turanganui Hotel, and diligent efforts were mad, with restoratives. Dr Heale was sent for, and by midnight the man was believed r to be out of danger.
