Striking somematches—it was very dark—he noticed Piokard being swept down by the rapid current, bis head being underwater. The mate at 01100 jumped over, and quickly got » along by tho piles of the wh,rf, and got hold of the drowning man. After much difficulty he succeeded in getting the man on to the wharf. Assistance was soon obtainable, aud Pickard, who bad swallowed. . a lot of water, was conveyed to the Turanganui Hotel, and diligent efforts were mad, with restoratives. Dr Heale was sent for, and by midnight the man was believed r to be out of danger.
