AUCKLAND, East night. The Austrian corvette Saida has gone to Valparaiso. There seems no prospect of a settlement of the boot operatives’ strike. Some of the men have gone South; others are on strike pay, John Dooley, aged 30, died suddenly at the Blue Post dining rooms, To-night the direct steamer Maori left for Napier after taking lu 4000 carcases of mutton aud 400 tone of general cargo. Mr Justice Conolly left to-day for New Plymouth to preside at the sittings of the Supreme Court there during the present week. From New Plymouth His Honor will proceed to Wellington to attend the Court of Appeal. He will bo absent from Auckland for about six weeks. SOUTHERN NEWS. Last nigbt. The steamer Mabiaanua, which waa ashore at Westport, has been floated off safely. The rhoßuix Club won the Wellington cricket Cup, having won every match of the season. At the Masonic Grand Lodge at Invercargill, a telegram wae read from L ird Onslow, saying that he would not accept bis nomination as Grand Master while the present differences existed. Mr 8. Milbank left Wellington yesterday for Melbourne ns repreeentative of the Federated Seamen’s Union at Che Labor Can ference which is to commence at Ballarat on the 22nd instant. It is estimated that somewhere about a quarter of a million men will be represented at the Conference, The Minister of Mines has received an invitation to open the Buhipuhl mining battery, and will probably visit there at the end of the month for that purpose. The steamer Wanaka is still lying in the same position, and on a closer inspection does not seem to be damaged to any considerable extent, but she is so far in shore that it will be expensive work to float her off. Hundreds went to visit the wreck yesterday. An inquiry ie proceeding. Mr William Nelson, of Nelson Bros,, addressed the sheep farmers at Blenheim on Saturday. There was a large attendance and the meeting was enthusiastic. At the close of his address guarantees amounting to 83,000 sheep for three years were handed in. The Committee of the Napier Chamber of Commerce has approved of the action of the Mh bourne Chamber re bills of lading, and resolved to send a proxy. The Minister rf D-fenoe intends to place fortifications and permanent artillery in four centres, under the control of officers com* mandiiig the volunteers in the respective districts. The Captains commanding the permanent Artillery are under notice. There will be a Serpeanr MJor in charge of each district. The Volunteers and Militia men will occasionally drill together, and a surprise alarm will be g ven shortly to test the efficiency of the working. Colonel Hums has resigned the Inspectorship of the Volunteers.
