BOROUGH COUNCIL
The above body met on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor, and Crs Dunlop, Joyce, Harding, Lewis. Hepburn, Taylor, McLernon, Coleman, and Whinray. F. Hicks and Co. wrote stating that they had a supply of Kaiti gravel on hand which would be suitable for footpaths and asphalting ; would deliver same at 3s 6d per yard.—The Overseer said there was nc shingle to be had, but he did not think the gravel would be suitable for the path between Derby and Cobden street except it was tarred at once The Gas Company wrote offering to fix three lights for the bridges at a cost of £lo.— The Mayor said the estimate had been sent in for information, as the lighting was unsatisfactory for the boats going through the bridges. —Cr Joyce said if the gas could be fixed on to the swing of ihe bridge be might mention that many people had expressed a desire for a light for the other end of Taruheru bridge.—The offer was deferred ; some members thought that the Harbor Board should bear the expense. The Overseer made a general report, in which he recommended a final payment of £2O to Mr Hicks.
Mr McKay, Secretary of the Charitable Aid Board wrote, asking on what terms the Council would let the Borough’s houses for the Old Men’s Refuge.—Cr Lewis said he with other members had. examined the property and considered it would suit for the purpose and cheapen the cost. Sqme of the houses needed repairing.—The Mayor thought the best thing would he to leave the Council’s side of the matter in the hands of the Public Works Committee, with power to act; the sooner it was curried into effect the better, Another man, he heard, was soon to be thrown on the Board,—Cr Lewis : lam told there are two now waiting in the Hospital.—Cr Joyce thought the application was mainly to ascertain the terms ou which the cottages would be let.—Cr Hepburn favored the early settlement of the matter by the Committees, which would be the best thing for all parties.—The Mayor’s proposal was seconded by Cr Hepburn, and adopted. It was decided to order another 100 yards of gravel from Mr Hicks at the same price. The Poundkeeper reported that for the past six months he had received £46 in fees. Since the present arrangement 543 head of stock had been impounded. Not a single complaint had been made, \ The following accounts were passed for payment:—A. B. Muir £4 10s, F. J. Or Joyce gave notice of motion that a competent accountant be appointed to go into the accounts, and have a clear etatement before a permanent officer ie appointed. Mr Wren said he had found the books clear enough, and any new man would have no difficulty in the matter. He was thoroughly that Mr Robinson could attend to the matters—he had not known a better young man in rd office, and the appointment' of an accountant would be a matter of expense, without accelerating anything,—-A discussion was being started on the subject, when it was ruled that the motion must come ou in the ordinary course.
