Tbe Inspector’s report of hie recent examination of our school having reached here has had the effect of not only elating the dominie, but also the parents of tbe scholars, as the children have, with only one exception, passed in the standards examined, It is not to be wondered at that the teacher is flushed with success, as he had the control of ths school for a few months only (apparently on trial), but having brought the scholars on so well, the Inspector has recommended that he be re iained as the master ot ths school. This is a busy time with the ehespfarmers here. AU seem to be anxious to get their flocks dipped before the wet veqther sets in. Feed ie plentiful, the welcome rain of last week having given the grass a good start tor the winter grazing. The side roads under formation are nearly flniahed, especially the one branching off from the hotel. Mr Boland expects to have it finished this week. He is now putting the finishing touches On it’in tlie Way of spreading the broken metal, a splendid quarry hiving been opened inclose proximity to the work. The other road, leading from the Gorge to Hangaroa, is occupying Mr Knox’s attention. He is now putting in tbe culverts and taking off the sharp corners preparatory to inviting Mr Grant, Q.E., up to inspect the length, some five or six miles. The pigeons are plentiful, I noticed a party of sportamen from Gisborne going to the lakes in search of game in season. They deserve Io get full bags, as they were fully equipped tor the ilaughur,
