LIBERAL ASSOCIATION.

The formation of a Liberal Association in Gisborne has been under consideration for some time, and is likely soon to take definite shape. No better time could be chosen than the present. Associations formed in the heat of election excitement seldom have more than a mushroom hold upon a place. They may do good service even during a short existence, but their responsibilities ought not to be considered of an evanescent nature. The first object of a Political Association should be to have an educational influence and create interest in politics. That can best be done at a time when the political atmosphere is not disturbed by vigorous controversies concerning the merits or dements of this and that candidate. There are always political questions deserving of serious attention, and upon which an interchange of views is a most desirable thing. If the Association did no more than help to create interest in such subjects it would be doing Substantial service, and before an election came round there could be such a crystallising of public opinion that no confusion would arise, and the Association could make its weight felt throughout the electorate. Feeling assured that the Association could be made of material benefit to the district, as well as to its individual members, we cordially wish that it may soon be an organised body taking a worthy part in the good work that lies before it.
