The N Z. Herald, a Conservative journal, sends off the following slinging truth upon the Atkinson party :—“We think that the action of the Government in refusing to passthe voucherfor Judge Edwards’ salary on the ground that there has been no appropriation, is the right course to takeThe sooner the scandal is terminated the better. The colonv cannot afford to have a judge going about whose every act is liable to be questioned. We presume that Mr Edwards will now return to the Government the appointment which he holds as a judge, and will make a claim by petition to the House for any damage he may have sustained. In all likelihood it will cost the colony a amount to get out of the difficulty. I his is another incident which causes reflection on what is responsible Government. There is no further responsibility for any mistake, however gross, than loss of office, and this does not amount to much when a Minister has it in his power to appoint himself to a ‘ snug billet.’ Mr Edwards has undoubtedly a claim for compensation, which we are likely to hear of when the House meets.”
