County Councillors.
[TO THE BDITOB. I Sib, —Some months ago I wrote to you upon this subject, and among other things urged that tn old settler like Mr King should have preference over a comparatively new arrival like Mr Bright. The ratepayers upheld that view, and Mr King was again elected; but a motion passed at the last meeting of the Council is rather a startler. He then applied for six months’ leave of absence from tho Council. Now it seems to me that a stand should at once have been made againct this sort of thing. I have a high respect for Mr King, and cannot help expressing surprise that he should have even thought of making such a request, when hie plain duly, to my mind, was first to have consulted the interests of the Giborne riding in the County. Representatives of other ridings of course arc not likely to object to give any member extended leave, as they thus gain a proportionate influence in urging the interest of their special districts. Mr King is a good Councillor, but when it becomes necessary that he should ask for six months’ leave, I think there is apparent the greater necessity that ho should, if only temporarily, give way to some one who can devote time to the duties. I commend this to the consideration of Ilia friends. —I am, 4-0., COWTT.
