SOUTHERN NEWS. Last night. The census returns of shipping taken at Wellington wharfs show 1982, making the grand total population of the city 32.937. The Government offices were closed in the afternoon to enable the officers to attend the late Mi* Blair’s funeral. The Premier and the other members of the Cabinet in Wellington attended. The body was sent to Dunedin in the Takapuna. The Minister of Justice, replying to a petition from Reefton against the dispensing with the servi -es of Mr Kenny, R.M., (formerly of Gisborne) states that the step is only part of a larger rearrangement by which the Department will secure greater economy than at present, with no less efficiency. The statement of claim in the Edwards case was filed this morning. It sets out that Judge Edwards was not appointed in succession tour in substitution for any other Judge, and goes on to pray that he be directed to show by what authority he acts as Judge, and if he sets up a plea of warrant from the Government it will be cancelled, as it was issued illegally. An affidavit is also fi'ed that the case be removed from the Supreme Court to the Court of Appeal. At the Nelson Education Board today Bishop Suter’s resignation as chairman and member was received, and accepted with great regret. He had been a member for more than 20 years. At Lyttelton, Alfred Bnrch, aged 25 years, wae found this morning with his throat cut. He had been suffering from erysipelas in his head. He was the fourth son of the late Captain Burch. The census returns for Taranaki County ore 10,788, Clifton County 970, Stratford County 2,526, on shipboard 22.
