QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY MEETING. Tnx following weights were declared at the Masonic Hotel on Thursday evening last for the Waerenga-a-hika Jockey Club’s Queen’s Birthday race meeting, to be held on the Waerenga-a-hika course on Monday, May 25, 1891 :— HANDICAP HURDLES.
Ths Gisborne horse Bit of Blue won the hurdle race at the Takapuna meeting. King Olaf, who won ths Hawkesbury Autumn Handicap, cut out the mile and a-half in 2.35}5. Not slow by any means. It is a matter worthy of note that out of fifty-four nominations for the Hurdles and Great Northern Steeplechase, ten out of that number hail from this district. If things go on in thia way Poverty Bay will soon have as big a name as Wanganui for raising “ leppers.” If fairly treated by the handicapper, it is not at all unlikely that Mr D. Hepburn will send Criminal and Duadine to Auckland to fulfil their engagements at the approaching steepchase meeting. The chestnut son of Foul Play—Renga has been given his first lesson at the illegitimate game, and it is said he takes kindly to his work, jumping beautifully.
