Mutual Improvement Society.
Tkehx was a good attendance of members of the above Society and friends to greet the new President (Bev. Mr Gibson) on Tuesday night. After the preliminary business a motion of welcome to Mr Gibson was proposed, and carried with acclamation. The President replied in a neat little speech, and expressed bis pleasure at meeting tbe members. He referred generally to the work of the Society, expressing sympathy with its objects, and stating his intention of rendering whatever assistance he could to further the interests of the Society. A programme which had been arranged for the evening was carried out. Songs were contributed by Misses Green and Steele (2), and Messrs J. and G. Searle; recitations by Messrs Stafford and Searle; a reading by Miss Jones, and a violin solo by Mr O. J. Veale. The various items were well received, end tho meeting dispersed, having a high opinion of the new President, and with great hopes of the future success of the Society.
At the Borough Council meeting on Tuesday Mr Warren mentioned that the Salvation Army barracks were exempt from rates, according to a decision in Wellington, hut tbe corps appeared on the dstaulterr list. It Was decided to remedy the matter,
