The mission of Captain Holdaway and comrades (Salvation Army) is a popular one in Gisborne, and the meetings are all well attended. Patutahi bad a big waking up last night. At the Council meeting on Tuesday night Cr Taylor aiain referred to the practice of driving vehicles at night without lights. It was decided to refer the matter to the attention of the police. A writer who fails to conceal his identity behind a nom-de-plume tries to work oft the chestnut that a dressmaker can command £225 a year in Gisborne. Union Literary Society—This (Thursday) evening. At the Police Court yesterday morning, Taita Maranga was charged with assaulting an elderly Maori woman named Miriama Waihi. Tbe defendant was fined £2. costs £1 Is, and and one witness’ expenses 15s, in default 30 days' hard labor. Two weeks were allowed tor payment. The attention of intending purchasers of fruit and ornamental trees, etc. is again referred to the advertisement io anaihsr column. M, E, Porter and Co have adopted a novel plan, that of delivering each purchaser's consignment, thus obviating the many inconveniences that would occur were the trees and plants sent in the usual manner. A competent man accompanies the shipments, and attends to the careful handling and delivery. AU plants are worked on blight proof stocks, and guaranteed trua to name. At a meeting of ths Whataupoko Road Bjard held on Tuesday afternoon, Mr E P. Joyoe was re elected Chairman. Accounts were passed as follows : —A. R Muir £6 13s 61, W. J..Quigley £2 2<, Hicks £6. It was decided to issue summouses immediately for all outstanding rates, and to apply to the County Council for the subsidy of £9O, which amount would be sufficient to carry on with during the ensuing year without striking a rate. The Clerk was instructed to give further notice to property owners to have the fennel removed, and several small works were ordered to bo done. In the Gisborne case, Gisborne Hospital Trustees v. Dr Henry Pollen, evidence waa taken (at Wellington) on the part of the defendant on Friday last. Mr Jellicoe appeared for the Trustees, and Mr Brandon for defendant. The claim is one for £9 2», cost of removing a telephone, which the Trustees allege defendant agreed to pay. The defendant was examined, and while disclaiming liability admitted that a certain arrangement had been made, subject to conditions whioh were not performed. He considered himself released from any moral obligation by the Secretary writing to him stating that Dr Innns hid agreed to pay, and that the cost would only be £5; by j the reduction of the salary, which might i have had the effect of preventing hie suej cessor from applying for the post; by the j general discourteous conduct of tbe Trustees ; since hie departure from Gisborne ; and by j the fact of the Trustees not having ths j courtesy to propose Dr Johnston when he applied for the post. The case is Bet down I for hearing this morning by Mr Booth.
