Saturday, May 16, 1891. AMALGAMATION.

Be just and fear not; Let all the ends thou aim’st at be thy eountry’a, Thy God’s* and

The proposed amalgamation of the offices of the three leading local bodies may now be considered as nigh unto death. In point of fact it is worse than dead. Had the matter been settled outright the position would have been clear, and there would be more paltering with the subject. The discussion at the County Council meeting yesterday left no room for doubt on the matter. There is a majority against the proposal, and unless there were almost complete nnanimity it would be useless attempting to proceed further with the scheme. The adjournment for three weeks is a protraction which would have been better avoided. The members of the County Council recognise that their work is now being very efficiently carried out by Mr Warren, and they do not think a small saving would justify them in Seeking for a change. That is a reasonable position to take up, and is in contrast to the raking up of antagonism between the two bodies. The delay in definitely settling the matter may have been made out of courtesy, but it is unwise in the circumstances.
