Tho local steamer Little Agnes, engaged in the Island trade, has been sold to a New Caledonian syndicate. The boot operatives employed by Mr Sexton, went out on strike today, because Mr Sexton, though paying on the Federal Statement, was supplying goods to the Northern Boot and Shoe Company, which is one of the places in which the men struck. Frank Wharfs was workibg in ths bush at North Albsrtland, when a rolling log crushed him to death. The Te Anau arrived from Sydney to-day. There are no passengers for Gisborne. SOUTHERN NEWS. Last night. J. E, Hendry has been appointed handicapper of the Canterbury Jockey Club. Captain Veale, the Dunedin coastal pilot, died in Wellington hospital to day, from the effects of a broken leg, The Appeal Court has adjourned until June 17, when the remaining judgments will be delivered. The steamer Talune, Captain Chatfield, the first of the Tasmanian Company’s boats under the Union Steamship Company’s flag, arrived at Dunedin from Sydney thia morning. The Hon. Mr Heddon met the Volunteer officers at Dunedin last night, end submitted proposals for the reorganisation of the ioroes. It is understood that these were unanimously approved of. The men working on the Wanaka, which was stranded at Waitara, arc not able to take advantage of the present spring tides to float off the vessel, as the work of putting the wooden bottom into her is not far enough advanced tofallow tbs weight of the steamer being put upon one. The attempt is postponed until the spring tides. A railway brakesman named James Gobb was killed yesterday at Lamsden, Southland, daring shunting operations.
