QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY BACES. The races at Waerenga-a-hika on Monday were favored with beautiful weather, and most of the racing was of a description that is well appreciated. There was no hitch of any kind during the day, and when in one race a close finish resulted the decision of Mr Campbell was immediately accepted. The boil-over in the handicap gave additional interest to the day’s proceedings. On the machine Wakatipu and Pani were competing against each other for the pride of being favorite, W'hen one gentleman went in and took twelve tickets on old Deceiver. This gave some others the idea that there was a good thing on, and when they also had decided to Bee if the bay could betray his trust he had a big amount of backing. When Zanzibar, whose condition seemed very poor, took the running and bad the race comfortably in hand, the prospect of a good dividend made the few who had backed him jubilant, while others naturally wished that they had got there too. The total put through the machine was £1382. Messrs Cooper and Barry giving full satisfaction in the working of the totalisator. The first race—the Hurdles—was not very interesting. Caitiff, Herbert, and Davy were scratched. Little Joe, 9.12, led once round, and was still gaining when be ran off. Oeo (Maher, list) won easily by a length; Stepper (Stone, 9.11) second, and Bustle (Harries, 9 5) third. Time, 4.19, 139 on the machine, GO on winner, dividend £2 Is. The second race—Hack Hurdles—was also disappointing. Davy 9 2 led all the way until nearing the last hurdle, and then ran off, leaving Parsons’ Herbert (Moore, 10.7) an easy victory. Orphan, 90, also ran off at the same hurdle. Stockfish, 912, was completely out of the race, taking the sticks in laughable fashion. Time 2.9 4-5; 122 on machine, 57 on winner, dividend £1 18s.

The Flying Handiap was a pretty race and resulted—Wethered’s Avis, Shaw, 78, 1; Walsh’s Pani, Power, 9.12, 2; Clark’s Misfortune, Banks, 83, 3. Papakura got off with the lead, Avis next, Misfortune and Zaccho at hand, and Pani and Truthful, 7 3, lying last. At the turn the grey forged through the ranks, and got second in the straight, but could not catch the leader, who won by nearly three lengths ; Papakura 7 4 was fourth. Caitiff 67 fifth, Pouawa 70 sixth, Zaccho 6 0 seventh. The other starters were Truthful 73, Assassin 64, and Puti 72. Time, 120; 251 on machine, 51 on the winner, dividend £4 Bs. In the Half-mile Scurry Mr Parsons had another win, the result being—Parsons’ Tekapu. Ready, 1; Malone’s Huneamunca, Malone, 2; Clarke’s Flirtation, Wright, 8. Bonus, Bruiser, Red Bover, Lorna, Punga, Daphne, Creeper, Weasel, and The Eogne also started. The favorite shot to the front and won comfortably after a good race. Time 1 53, 192 on the machine, 70 on winner, dividend £2 9s.

The Birthday Handicap, of 40 sovs., li miles, (rave a big surprise. Bailey’s Zan zibar, Saybrook, 611, was first; Wethered’s Deceiver, Shaw, 7 0,2; Walsh’s Pani, Power 99, 3. Wakatipn 912, Misfortune 80, Nora 77, Pouawa 75, and Harlequin 60, also started; Truthful 72, and Papakura 7 0 were scratched. Deceiver and Zanzibar Jay together at the start, and going past the stand they were in that order, with Pani third, and Wakatipn, Misfortune, and Pouawa in a bunch. Then Zanzibar drew out to the front, while Nora closed up, and Wakatipu gradually worked through. But Zanzibar still maintained the lead, and at the turn for home the lightweight clearly had the race, and won by a couple of lengths from Deceiver, Pani six lengths behind, Pouawa fourth, Nora fifth, and Wakatipu Sixth. Time 2 47; 280 on machine, 10 on winner, dividend £25 4s. The Hack Flat Eace was the best run of the day—Orwell, McLean, 83, 1; Stockfish, Ashdown, 80, 2; Herbert, Moore, 810, 8. Dancing Master 88, Zaccho 712, Bustle 74, Stanley 74, Little Joe 70, and Bonus 66, also started. Dancing Master got away first, with Zaccho and Orwell well up. A good race followed, Stockfish getting to the front, bpt being beaten by a nose by Otwell. Zaccho finished fourth, and Dancing Master fifth. Time 1 54; 214 on machine, 60 on winner, dividend £3 4s. The final race, the Forced Handicap, was regarded as a very open event, and it gave stood race to finish up with. Assassin, 60, got away first, with Deceiver 710 at hand. Presently Avis (Sceats, 87) went through to the front, and won comfortably, Papakura (Eeady 78) second, and Decaiver third. Zanzibar 87, Nora 76, and Stockfish 6 4 also started. Oe, 60, was scratched Time 149 ; 184 on machine, 28 on winner dividend £5 18s.
