Amalgamation Proposal.
CHECKMATING IN THE BOROUGH COUNOIL. At the ordinary tweeting of the Council, Cr Whinray moved, In accordance with notice, that tbe resolution negativing amalgamation be rescinded. Cr Joyce : I think the thing is out of order. SThe Mayor : I second tbe motion, to put the liscussion in order.] The motion should have been rescinded previous to passing ths second motion. The Mayor considered the motion would be in order, because it would leave the ground clear if there was any appointment to be made. Cr Dunlop moved as an amendment that applications be called for the position of Town Clerk, at a salary of £2OO a year. Cr Whinray said that would not be In order, Cr Dunlop said it would be following up the previous motion, The Mayor thought the proper way would be to take the resolution as it stood. Cr Dunlop contended that an amendment could be made to a motion. One motion bad been passed in defiance of a resolution already on the books. Cr Whin« ray's motion was really to patch’up what had been irregularly done. Still there was no use wrangling over it, as it had been ruled that it could be done. He thought they were only wasting tjqie, and that there pot much chance of the County agreeing to amalgamate. In ths event of amalgamation with the Board he considered that at any rate so far as the Council was concerned the appointment would have to be approved of by them. Cr Coleman said Cr Dunlop’s motion was in the face of one already passed to the contrary, • After further discussion on tbe procedure the Mayor ruled that Cr Dunlop's motion could not come on until after that of Cr Whinray had been decided on its merits. Or Dunlop then stated that seven days’ | notice bad not'been given as requited by tbe
The Mayor said he must apologise for that not having been done. Permission was then given Cr Whinray to bring his motion on at next meeting. Cr Dunlop said he wished to see the matter brought to a head, instead of allowing things to drift on as they were doing, and he gave notice of the motion he had previously read.
