The Gisborne Standard AND COOK COUNTY GAZETTE PUBLISHED VERY TUESDAY, THURSDAY, AND Saturday Morning.
Thursday, May 28, 1891. THE EDWARDS' CASE.
Be just and fear not; Let all the ends thou aim’st at be thy country’s, Thy God’s, and truth’s.
The decision in the case of Judge Edwards will be welcomed, as setting at rest a question that has been a grave scandal to the colony. The outcome is not what could have been wished, for as we take it the Appeal Court has upheld the right of the Government to appoint a Judge without consulting Parliament, and that the Judge so appointed is then placed above the control of either the Crown or Parliament. If this be the meaning of the judgment the only safeguard the people will have will be that the mere fear of losing office will be sufficient to prevent any Government making improper use of its power. Unfortunately, as in the case of Council appointments, it has been proved that even defeated Governments can do some queer things. In the one case, however, the person appointed is only one among a large number, bnt a Judge has a great power by. virtue of his office.
