A letter on the Chinese question is unavoidably held over. An ordinary meeting of the Charitable Aid Board will be held this afternoon. The coastal steamer Australia arrives from North this evening, and leaves for Napier after diecharging'cargo. The Wairarapa, from Sydney and Auckland, is due here at 1 o’clock to-morrow afternoon. She steams for Southern ports and Melbourne at 5. The steamer Southern Cross does not reach Gisborne till Saturday morning, from Wellington. Union Literary Society :—This (Thursday) evening—“ A Night with Masters of Wit and Humor.” Members requested to bring tionsThe Union Company's steamer Talune has taken up the Hauroto’s running and arrives from South on Sunday morning. A select Soaial and Dance in aid of the funds of the Roman Ca’holio Church will be held in the City Rink on the 18th inst. Messrs Pitt and Davies will sell at their mart on Wednesday nsxt a choice selection of plants, etc., from the well-known gardens of Messrs Bull and Sons. Messrs Horne and Fraser, farriers and blacksmiths, have started business next to Mr Little's stables in Lowe street. Me Horne is more popularly known as ” Scotty,” and has for years been in Mr Humphrey’s employ, while his partner, Mr Fraser, was formerly in the South Island. Our Sydney correspondent thinks that ths lack of interest the New South Wales Parliament shows in matters of really needed reform proves that the House has outlived its usefulness, and is rapidly degenerating into the mere sport and tool of place-hunt-ing politicians. Mr Piesse’s investigation of the B orough accounts proves conclusively that the embezzlements were going on as far back as 1881. Baldwin was tried in September, 1887, so that the statements circulated through the columns of our contemporary, and through the Press Association are proved to have no foundation. Mr Kelly accompained by Messrs Harding, Joyoe, and Carroll took a drive round the oountry yesterday morning. They went through Patutahi and Te Arai, returning by way of Waeronga-a hika. Dr Canaris gave his last performance in Gisborne last evening, whan his wonderful tricks were again much admired. This evening the residents of Patutahi will have an exceptional treat, and thosa who have not s'.en the entertainment should not miss this opportunity.
