Christchurch Gads.

The Christchurch Press, which some time ago devoted a leading article to some scathing comments on the characteristic* of the girls of that city, now follows it up with one dealing with the foibles and inanities of Christchurch young men. From this reliable authority we learn that they are not capable of great virtues or great vices- They do not gamble or drink to any alarming extent, and they are tolerably clean in their language. Mediocrity is apparently their leading characteristic. Their economy borders CO parsimonionsness. In society they are pronounced snobs aud unmannerly cubs. They affect an unutterable contempt for everything colonial. They would rather die of thiret in the desert of Sahara than drink a glass of colonial beer. They prefer the fiery and adulterated wine of Europe to the light and wholesome wines of Australia. They pine to go to London so Ihat they can be measured by a London tailor, and for ever after they eschew Colonial tweeds, and will encase themselves in any ifioddy material if only it be English. Colonial boots are to them eq abomination. As to taking an interest in colonial politics, they are far above that, though on the other hand, they know about as little of English politics as the average English ploughman. On the whole tbg Christchurch young man, as depicted by tbg local critic, seems to be an illmannered, coo. ceited, and ignorant cad.
