The Union Company’s coastal steamer Australia, frcm Auckland via way ports, arrived in the bay yesterday morning, bringing—Messrs Guff, Chrisp, Branson, Carroll, Irvine, A. Rind, and H. Carter. Mr Sturge was the only passenger booked last night to leave by the Cross. The Union Steamship Company’s s.s, Talune (pronounced as if spelt Talooney), which arrived in Wellington the other day from Sydney, formerly belonged to the Tasmanian Steam Navigation Company, and is a fine roomy vessel, very fesr, and a capital sea boat. She is a new boat built of steel, of 1,284 tons register and built in 18J0 at Leitb by Ramage and Fergusson, and classed 100 Al at Loyd’s. She has accommodation for about 185 passengers, 120 in the saloon and 65 in the steerage. She is fitted with all the latest machinery,’ and should prove a valuable addition to the Union Company’s fine fleet of steamers. Captain Chatfield has been appointed temporarily in charge of the Talune, and with him as chief officer is Mr W. T. Wilson ; second, Mr J, Hannan; chief engineer, Mr Doolan. Owing to the heavy sea running in the bay yesterday, the steamer Australia had to seek ebelter under Young Nick’s Head, where she discharged the Gisborne portion of her cargo. The Union Company’s Talune, from Melbourne via South, arrives in Gisborne early to morrow morning. She goes on as far as . Auckland this trip, returning here on Friday next. The Union Company’s steamer Southern Cross left Napier at 5 last evening, and is due here first thing this morning. She goes North at 8. The Union Companj’s Ohau does not reach here from South till Thursday morning.
