The position in which a person is placed who takes up a rightful cause in the face of those who have the power in their hands may be judged by the following remarks in a contemporary concerning Sir Edward Clarke’s commendable conduct in the baccarat case :—ln the performance of his duty to his client, the Solicitor-General has not hesitated to assail even the highest in the land, although his doing so may possibly, and indeed probably, militate against his own professional interests, We do not suppose that what he has said will affect Sir Edward Clarke's political position as Solicitor-General. Lord Salisbury would never dare brave public opinion by sacrificing his officer on account of pro. fessional boldness, but Her Majesty would be very unlikely to sanction Sir Edward Clarke’s advancement to the Bench when in ordinary course he would have a right to expect it. Her Majesty is not likely to overlook or forgive the remarks he has made on her son, and their very truth will probably add to their sting. Perhaps, however, in the course of time the Prince himself may prove more magnanimous and forgive Sir Edward Clacke’s boldness in performing his professional duty even as another Prince of Wales forgave a Chief Justice who had taught him practical obedience to the majesty of the law. We cannot wonder’ that . the Solicitor-General’s speech caused a sensation and evoked popular applause even in the calm precincts of a Court of Justice.
