FOOTBALL.

Owing to the Waerenga-a-hika team not putting in an appearance on Saturday afternoon, a practice match was played, the Turanganui forwards and alloomer backs being on the one side, and the allcomer forwards and Turanganui backs on the other. A good practice was indulged in by the players. The Turanganui backs, coached by A. Rees, did some very good passing at times, and all through the game showed up to advantage. The Turangani forwards seem to lack combination in their play, and before they meet the Napier Pirates they will have to improve a good deal. In the first spell tries were obtained by Muir, Phillip, and Rees.' In each case the kick at goal was a failure. In the second spell Hepburn. CrawforJ, Hope, Forest, Matthews, and Muir obtained tries, DeCosta and Tubaka kicking a goal each. Of the Turanganui forwards, Forest, Hope, Nisbett, Sherriff, and Poynter were the most conspicuous, while Hutchinson, Nekora, Tnhaka, and Reeyes showed up to advantage on the other side. The game resulted in a win for the Turanganui backs and allcomer forwards by nine points to three. The Turanganui team are requested to go in for training in view of the coming match with the Pirates, which takes place in a very short time. Mr Frank Loomb, the popular captain of the Turanganui Club is leaving Gisborne after Saturday next, and the Club will thus lose the services of one of the best players in the district, and one whose popularity has always been so great that his departure will be more regretted from feelings of friendship than on account of the loss the team will sustain.

The Napier Pirate team have sent up word that they will be prepared to meet the Turanganui team on Saturday, July 18. That being the case it will rest upon the team to waken up considerably, or the match will be simply a gift to the Napier Club. The team ought to be hard at woik in the way of training. It would be a pity if the team neglected its opportunities and simply threw a victory into the hands of the Pirates.
