A Popular Theatrical Company.

Last night’s attendance at the Theatre Royal gave a special opportunity to judge of the popularity of the Dobson-Kennedy Company. The night was a miserably wet one, and though it was the Company’s ninth night—an unprecedented run in Gisborne—there was a large attendance. To-night the highly-emotional drama “ Ticket of Leave Man ” is to be played. It is a skilfully-worked plot. The hero falls into bad company, is wrongfully convicted and sentenced to penal servitude ; he returns, marries the girl who was indirectly the cause of his ruin, obtains honest employment, is dismissed through treachery, he returns good for evil and saves his master from ruin. Our contemporaries speak very highly of the way in which the Company play the drama. Miss Thornton takes the part of the incorrigible youth Sam, and therefore it is certain the character will be popular. Miss Hill is bound to happily fill the part, of May Edwards. Mrs Jermyn takes the part of Mrs Willoughby, the gossip. The hero of the drama is played by Mr Dobson, whose ability to sustain the part is beyond question. Mr Kennedy takes the character of Hawkshaw, a shrewd Scotland-yard detective, who appears in the get-up of a navvy. The others are also allotted to capable actors. During the performance of this play at Wanganui the audience seemed completely carried away, and In the last act, where Bob Brierly exclaims, “ Give me another chance, boys I For God’s sake, five me another chance I” an excited inividual in a front seat got up, waived his hat, and shouted, “ Yes, fads 1 Do give him another chance for God’s sake 1”
