POLITICAL GOSSIP.

[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellinoton, last night, Mr Vaile’s system of railway charges is likely to have a practical trial. The Ministry are in favor of a trial being given, and the committee who have been considering petitions on the subject recommended the granting of a trial on one of the Auckland railways. The majority of fifteen which was recorded against Mr Hutchinson's Private Schools Bill last night is regarded as the most emphatic pronouncement yet made against interference with the secular system. The division showed the Government divided against itself. The Premier and Mr Ward were the only two Ministers who voted for the measure.

The Native Ministers admits that great hardships have been inflicted on Europeans in the Northern districts, on account of their having to pay the entire cost of divisional fences when their property adjoins that owned by natives, but on the other hand he considers it unwise to enforce the law against natives In this respect. The Government, however, will endeavor to adopt a scheme to deal fairly with both races so far as settled districts are concerned.
