The Gisborne Standard AND COOK COUNTY GAZETTE Published every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday Morning.

Thursday, July 23, 1891. THE HARBOR.

Be just and fear not; Let all the ends thou alm’st at be thy oountry’B, Thy God’s, and truth’s.

Information of a reliable source from Wellington ia to the effect that if the Public Accounts Committee approve of the loan to the Gisborne Harbor Board on the security of the plant,- the money to be repaid when the unnecessary plant is sold, the Government will throw no obstacle in the way, and may probably give the proposal support. What chance there is of the Committee’s approval of the scheme being obtained cannot be known for a day or so. Failing other assistance, of which there does not appear to be the slightest hope, there can be no-harm in pushing on in the direction now taken, to ascertain what prospect there may be. It is really nothing more than a matter of convenience in regard to the district’s own property, but it may be made of substantial service if obtained. A question may arise, even if the application is successful, whether it is advisable to carry out Mr O’Connor’s scheme, but it will be time enough to deal with that when there is an opportunity to make a choice. It is beyond arguing that it will be a number of years before the district can of itself bear the taxation that would be necessary for further experimenting on a large scale, and it is for that reason that the disposal of the machinery at a reasonable figure has general approval. Differences of opinion on the advisableness or otherwise of putting faith in Mr O’Connor’s scheme after past experience, may well be deferred until the question has become a practical one—that is, until there is a possibility of moving in the matter if so desired.
