Be just and fear not; Let all the onds thou aim’st at be thy country’s, Thy God’s, and truth’s.
The Gisborne bakers, owing to the increased price of flour, have felt it necessary to follow the example of other towns, and increase the price of bread.
The financial condition of one institution which is the pride of the place—the Garrisqp Band —has become poorly, and to remedy this state of things a couple of entertainments of a popular class are being arranged for. There is pretty certain to be a loyal response to any appeal from a body that has done so much to deserve the approbation of the public. Without its Band Gisborne would be like a healthy man who would die for laziness to take a breath of fresh air.
The Farmers' Co-operative Association, under the management of Mr J. Lewis, has opened in its new store nearly opposite the Standard office. All purchasers, whether shareholders or not, are privileged to participate in the profits, in proportion to the value of their purchases, printed tickets being given to each person.
The Te Reinga Falls, beyond Tiniroto, are a glorious sight during the present rainy season. The beautiful spray from the raging volume of water is thrown, Mr Beswick informs us, as high as the top of the Loan and Mercantile Company’s building in Gisborne, and the grandeur of the sight makes even one with whom the falls had become commonplace by reason of frequent opportunities to witness them, pause for a time to feast his eyes on the scene. Anyone who saw the falls now for the first time eould not fail to be enraptured by the sight.
The little public hall which the settlers of Waimata have had erected, was opened on Sunday last by divine service, conducted by Mr Tombleson. On Monday night there was a public meeting held, at which there was a general discussion. One gentleman introduced a little animation, and got off some oratorical fireworks at the devoted heads of the old Committee, for, as he contended, holding office longer than was proper, they having thought their duty was to continue office until the hall was erected, while their critic contended that they should not have held office a day’more than twelve months. The following Committee were elected for the ensuing year l—Messrs Richardson, (sen.), H. Kenway, John Richardson, Tombleson, and Martin.
The Gisborne-Wairoa mailman arrived in Gisborne a day later than usual this week. The road is almost impassable. He met Mr Gold-Smith and party on their way to Waikaremoana on Survey Office business, and they appeared to have had a bad time of it, being much delayed through their horses getting bogged in the quagmire. On the Wairoa side of the road, several dangerous slips have occurred, and he had much trouble through his horse getting bogged. When about thirty miles from Gisborne last Monday he experienced a very severe hailstorm, the hail being left on the ground to a depth of over an inch. Altogether a mailman’s life on the East Coast is not a very happy one in these times, when bad weather acting upon wretched roads makes travelling a thing that the most hardy would prefer to avoid.
At the Police Court yesterday morning, William Ferguson was fined costs 15s, for furious riding. Mr G. R. Wyllie has 9000 acres of bush and fern land for sale ; also 700 acres bush land adjoining the Paritu block. Mr Gibson preaches morning and evening at Wesley Church to-morrow. Evening subject :—“ Preparations for Christ’s coming.” Mr Quigley, architect, received two tenders for alterations and additions to a house at Matawhero, for Messrs Bloomfield Bros. The tenders were W. O. Skeet (accepted) and J, Mackrill ZUB. The heavy rain on Thursday night did not prevent fully sixty people being present at the entertainment given by the Union Literary Society, which was very much appreciated. A private meeting was held on Thursday night of those interested in the formation of a Band of Hope Society in connection with Holy Trinity Church. It was considered that such a Society could be made a success, and a preliminary meeting will probably be held on Friday next.
The rise in mutton appears to be benefiting the sheepfarmers, seeing that 16s per head is being paid for wethers for freezing. Messrs Clark Bros., of Tamumu, yesterday .forwarded a truck load of wethers at that price to Tomoana, the money being payable for the sheep delivered at the Kaikora railway station. —H.B. Herald.
Accidents have been very frequent lately in town and country. On Wednesday Peter Ganley had his leg crushed from above the knee, while he was doing bush work at Panikau. The poor fellow was taken by sledge to the Pakarae Hotel, the journey being a terrible one. Dr Innes was wired for, and hastened up to do all that medical skill could do for the sufferer. The man was then brought down to the hospital.
The following significant paragraph appears in the H.B. Herald “We have received the following, written on a postcard : Sir, —Will you be good enough to inform the public of Hastings through your columns that the fire inspector has locked up the fire brigade plant, taken away the key, and defies the brigade to use it, from which action a calamity must result in case of a fire occurring ? —I am, &c., A. A George, secretary H.V.F.8.”
