The (chooser Opotiki sailed last night for Napier. The steamer Dinagdee arrives from South on Friday morning. Captain Skinner’s new schooner Awanui was off Hicks Bay when the Janet Niccol was lying at anchor at that port. The steamer Ohau arrives at daylight this morning, from Dunedin via way ports, and leaves again for Tauranga and Auckland at 9. The steamer Janet Niccol had a rough time of it on the trip down. She left Auckland at 7.15 on Wednesday night, and did not reach Hicke Bay till between 5 and 6 on Friday evening, at which time the gale was blowing with hurricane force, and the anchors were barely able to hold the vessel. She remained there till the following night, and then proceeded on her passage south. All along the coast the Janet Niccol had to contend with a succession of southerly gales, accompanied by a heavy head sea. No communication was held with any of the coast ports, with the exception of Hicks Bay.
