The following message was crowded out last issue:—Dunedin, Monday.—A fire, the origin of which is a mystery, was discovered last evening on the premises of Levy and Guthrie, clothing manufacturers, Rattray street. This firm hold a policy over their stock and machinery for £220 in the South British, and £3OO in the Equitable, but the amount of that insurance is greatly exceeded by the value of the stock. Bing, Harris, and Co. had a large quantity of stock in the factory, also being made up into clothes, and this was insured in the Union office for £lOO, The number of persons to whom employment was given in the factory was eighty. A considerable amount of damage was done to the stock of shopkeepers whose premises were below the clothing factory, as the water simply poured down through the top floor into the shops beneath. Mr Taylor, mercer, was the largest sufferer. He had his stock and fittings insured for £9OO in the Commercial Union office. Mr Shaw's jewellei’s stock is insured far £BOO in the New Zealand office, and Mr Johnston had his ironmongery insured for £l5OO, divided equally between the Standard, Victoria, and Guardian office?. The building of which Mr Johnston was lessee was insured for £lOO in the Norwich Union office,
