SPORTING.

A Melbourne cablegram states that the names of Propounder and Flinders should have appeared amongst the acceptances for the Melbourne Cup. Fernando and The Serf have been withdrawn from the Caulfield Cup. The following is a description of the Open Flemington Steeplechase at the Victorian meeting, the race being won by a New Zealand horse:—Rob Boy was the first to move, and led to the first fence, where he blundered, but made a splendid recovery. At the second fence, however, he came down, and Flashlight took up the running, followed by Cornet, Jacko, and Postscript. As they passed the stand all were going steadily ; Jacko had the lead from Postscript, and Cornet, and Height was lying fourth. The lastnamed baulked at the palings, but eventually got over, and set sail after the others. Cornet assumed command as they went out of the straight, and led along the river side from Flashlight, Postscript, Jacko, and Studley; but approaching the bridge Jupiter suddenly shot* to the front, and drawing out, went away with a clear lead from Studley, Flashlight, Cornet, and Jacko, while Knight, who had made up lost ground in a wonderful manner, attached himself to the first division. At the back of the course Flashlight and Jupiter were fighting it out between them ; but at the abattoirs Jacko fell, and Knight, for a few Strides, took up the running, but he died away almost immediately, At the sheds Studley was leading, but soon after Jupiter took command, and the New Zealander leading over the last fence from Dolphin, finished a winner by two lengths, Studley Was three lengths away third, Bell SwiveVer fourth, Cornet fifth, Flashlight sixth, and Jacko last. Time, 4m. s}s.
