An ordinary meeting of the Harbor Board takes place this evening.

At the Court on Saturday W. J. Quigley was fined 5s and costs 7s, for allowing a chimney to catch fire,

A certificate was yesterday granted by Mr Booth to a deed of transfer from Buka Aratapu to Herewaka Poata, of Hinarna No 2 block,

At the Mutual Improvement Society last night, Mr J. East read an interesting essay on "The vegetable kingdom.” One new member was proposed.

An influential meeting of journalists was held on Saturday at Wellington, Mr Rous Marten presiding. Among those present were the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Minister for Education, and Mr Crirnoroas, M.H.R. It was unanimously decided to establish an Institute of New Zealand Journalists, and a provisional committee was appointed to draw up a constitution. When the Grand Jury list was being called out at the Supreme Court yesterday morning the name of ” Francis James Piesse ” was called, when there was a significant expression on the faces in Court. It is needless to siy that no warrant was issued for the apprehension of the absentee;

The School Committee yesterday afternoon received the following applications for the position of Secretary : —T. Shirley, W. Lunn, H. McKay, G. Lysnar, R. Skeet, F. Sherriff, G. Deßlaquiere, W. Ratcliffe, G. Turnbull, G. Wilson, H. M. Porter, W. Ranger, W. Quigley. The Committee appointed Mr Quigley. This was all the business.

The Bankruptcy Court opened at 10 yesterday morning, before His Honor Mr Justice Conolly. There was only one case, an application for discharge in re Daniel Courtenay, Mr Jones represented the debtor, and there being no opposition the discharge was granted, It was stated that only one creditor had taken the trouble to prove in the estate. Tbe whole business of the Bakruptcy Court was transacted in a few minutes,

At the Police Court yesterday morning Ronga Eruera and Kauria to Puka, two young natives, were charged on the information of Constable Reddell with having on Wednesday the sth inst stolen one pig, of the value of 355, the property of Peter Livingstone, of Te Aral. The accused, for whom Mr Lincoln Bees appeared, pleaded not guilty. After the evidence had been taken Mr Booth dismissed the charge, on the ground there was not suffijient evidence to connect the accused with the charge, and that there was some doubt as to whether the accused held the belief that the pig was a (trild one.
