On Thursday last Messrs Weir and Sellars completed their contract for the Kaiteratalii bridge, and it is now open for traffic. All the hands employed on the work were paid off on that day.
People are cautioned to be careful of counterfeit coins that have been detected to be in circulation in the district. A letter in reference to Building Society matters is held over.
The lecture at the Union Literary Society on Thursday evening, by Mr Hugo, proved very popular. Adjutant Bishop, of the Salvation Army, arrived in Gisborne yesterday from Auckland, and the special meetings which are to be held in the district will attract large congregations. The following cases were decided at the R.M. Court on Thursday Harbor Board v. H. Hill, claim 2s 6d, costs 7s, Same v. E. Dempsey, claim Ss 48, costs 7s. Same v. H. Gully and others, claim costs 7s.
Messrs Hall and Ormond intend exhibiting publicly this afternoon, in Gladstone Road, an arrangement invented and patented by Mr J. Smajll (formerly of Gisborne) for releasing runaway horses from vehicles, by simply touching a handle, placed in front of the driver. We are informed there is great demand for them in the South, where they have been tried.
