Thursday, August 20, 1891. AGRICULTURAL SHOW.

Be just and fear not; Let all the ends thou aim's! at be thy country’s, Thy God's, and truth’s.;

A GENERAL meeting is to be held next week of those gentlemen imbued with sufficient public spirit to endeavor to bring an agricultural and pastoral show to a successful issue this year. Upon the outcome of that meeting the chances of the show must in a great measure depend. There is no question that the district is quite capable of organizing once a year a show that would take fair comparative rank with the gatherings in the larger centres of the colony, but natural advantages will be of little avail if there is not energy, assisted by a co-operative spirit, thrown into the work. The arrangements can perhaps be even better carried out by a few gentlemen having the necessary qualifications, but in laboring for the general good they must feel that their efforts have the appreciation of the settlers. Public interest can best be shown in the affair by a large and representative gathering at the general meeting next week, when the arrangements require to take some definite form. If that meeting is sparsely attended, and there is the carelessness of letting “ everybody’s business be nobody’s in particular,” there will not be much hope of ensuring a show that would be worthy of the district. Early attention is now called to the matter, so that it may be gone into on its merits, and no such excuse be allowable as want of sufficient notice. The Society is in funds to some extent to begin with, and there should not be much difficulty in satisfactorily financing a show this year.
