INSURANCE RATES.
An instance of the way in which Gisborne is served at times was exposed at the meeting of the Borough Council on Tues, day night. When the Mayor mentioned how shabbily the Borough hW bsflj)
treated in regard to the application for a reduction of the heavy insurance rates. The letter appears to have just been ignored by the Association, although a gentleman had been to Gisborne and had an opportunity of judging of the efficient condition of the town’s appliances for the prevention of fire. This is one of those matters in which redress can only be hoped for after continual agitation, and the Council is showing an active concern for the interests of the ratepayers by persisting in this matter. The insurance rates that at present rule in Gisborne are really extortionate, considering the efficiency of the fire prevention appliances, but it is only by pressing this matter with all the force that can be brought, on the attention of the Companies, that any diminution of the rates, can be hoped for.
