POLITICAL GOSSIP.
[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, last night, It is understood that no announcement in regard to the appointment of Mr Perceval as Agent-General will be made until the end of the present session, but his selection will nevertheless practically be decided upon. Mr Perceval's appointment will create a vacancy in Christchurch City, which will be contested by Mr Montgomery (formerly member for Akaroa). who will be a candidate in the Government interest, aijd he will be opposed by Mr L. Cohen, barrister, in the Opposition interests. Mr Fish is mentioned as a not improbable successor of Mr Perceval, as Chairman of Committees. There was a lively meeting of the Native Affairs Joint Committee to-day, when, despite the Minister’s protest, it was decided on Taipua’s motion not to proceed with any Native legislation this session.
