The Rinking Carnival.

The rinking carnival at the City Rink this afternoon and evening ought to attract a large attendance on each occasion. Apart from the interact in rinking at any time, there will be special features this afternoon and evening that will be in themselves worth witnessing. Mr Ranger has for some time past been devoting attention to the training of a number of boys and girls to perform the pretty Maypole movements, and a representative of the Standard had a look in at the Bink on Thursday afternoon to see the skaters at their fascinating practice. He had the pleasure of witnessing a band of merry, laughing boys and girls gracefully going through the various difficult manoeuvres, gliding inwards and*{outwards as they circled round the Maypole in the centre of the hall, and wound or unwound the strings attached to the pole. They showed themselves remarkably expert in their movements on the little wheels. They executed the Maypole dance in single order, and subsequently in pairs, in a style that no spectator could fail to admire, The proficiency they show is no doubt to some extent due to the delight which they themselves take in the fascinating pastime. After the Maypole portion of the programme was done with they set off round the room with a merriment that made the spacious building seem a most happy rendezvous, Some of them had a ball which they cleverly bounced as they gyrated round the room, and all showed skill in their skating. The fancy costume in which the boys and girls' appear at the public exhibition should greatly increase the prettiness of the eight. The Maypole dance is to be executed at about three this afternoon, and also in the evening. Following the dance in the evening there will be a muff polo match, which is bound to create great fun.
