AT the present, when women’s suffrage is agitating the public mind, the contest for Wisbech seat, Sussex, is of considerable interest. Mr Brand, the Liberal candidate, was returned by a majority of 260 over his Conservative opponent, making the nineteenth seat which the Liberals had won since the general election. The seat was really won by Mrs Brand. She had never in her life before made speeches, but she is not of a nervous disposition, and she went to the meetings and addressed the men, and then sang to them at the close of the business. On one occasion she sang to them at an open air meeting during dinner hour. The men clamored for a song, and she thought it right to do anything that would assist her husband. The songs she chose were popular old ballads and Irish songs. The Times is quite indignant at such electioneering tactics, and all the Mrs Grundys in the country have been quite ruffled by Mrs Brand’s “ unwomanlike ” conduct, but the Pall Mall Gazette points out that she has done no more than made practical use of the principles of the Primrose League dames. Mr Fish has here a capital text to work upon in his attacks upon the wtftnen’s franchise, though it will be open to the comment that Mrs Brand might herself make a better member than Mr Fish.
