There will be much sympathy with Captain Logan, of the U.S.S. Manapouri, concerning the touching of that vessel at Cape Schanck. We do not mean sympathy because he has been punished by the Marine Board at Melbourne, for no one should be allowed to escape punishment when he has been found at fault while he has had the safety of many lives and valuable property in his care. A suspension of his certificate is really too light once it was proved that he had shown negligence. But everyone will regret that this should have occurred just before the Captain’s retirement from the sea after having gained a reputation for being one of the most reliable Captains on Australian waters. His own feeling will doubtless be far greater punishment to him than that which has been inflicted. The trouble appears to be that experience and capability made the Captain at an unlucky moment less careful than he ought to have been, and thus one of the brightest careers in the intercolonial coastal service is tarnished. Captain Logan, it is stated, broke down during the course of the enquiry, which shows how keenly he must feel his position. He could face the wildest storm, and keep cool command while the fierce elements raged round about his vessel, but the reflection on his honor unmans him—or makes him more a man in every generous man’s eye.
