Be jast and fear not; Let all the ends thou aim’s! at be thy country’s, Thy God's, and truth’s.:
The decision of the Government party to appoint Mr Rees Chairman of Committees ought to be warmly appreciated by all excepting those who can see no good in an opponent. Mr Rees’ capabilities are infinitely superior to those of the other candidates nominated for the vacancy. He is undoubtedly an enthusiast with a great fund of energy to carry him through difficulties that most men would shrink from, but though he is what may be termed a good fighting man, there is enough known of him to give the assurance that he will impartially carry out the duties of Chairman of Committees in the House. It is a position in which party enthusiasm must be tempered by a well-balanced judgment, so that the duties may be discharged without favor to individual or party. That Mr Rees will be able to give general satisfaction we have not the slightest doubt, and we think the Government party have acted wisely in the selection. Without intending any detraction from the merits of the other individuals whose names have been mentioned, the superior abilities of Mr Rees must be recognised, and our hearty congratulations are tendered to him on his appointment.
