There are twelve Napier horses entered for the Cup. The nominations for the four events are 57 more than last year. Boff Mid Black write. My selection for the Metropolitan Stakes (Yowi), run at the A JC. meeting, got home first, Yowi is a five-yror-old mare, and is by Melbourne— Yelena. She was trained by Mr J. Chsafe, who at one time was stud groom for Mr A. McLean at Havelock, and got married here, His son rode Yowi, snd got home cleverly Sunshine. The winner has not a very brilliant record, but the was certainly thrown I?. W r h i°i nI Z f b 6 ,? he h>s a »“ t-9 Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, There • great diversity of opinion as to which is the better horse, Strom boli or Oxile. The former first got horns in tha A.J.C. Derby, and the latter wore the son ot Chester down and won the Foal Stakes. Both are said to hare been very good race., Stromboli, who is by Chester —Etna, won four out of ten rases as a two-year-old. Oxide (Sardonyx- Geraldine) ran four times as a Iwo-year-old, bnt only got home once, and that was in the Champagne Stakes, when, curiously enough, Stremboli was second. A terrible battle is expected between the pair when they meet in the V.B.C. Derby next month, when it is thought Stromboli will he downed. Well, my opinion is that they bare a better horse in the stable than Stromboli, who has not yet been wound up. lam alluding to Bengal (by Chester—Gymkana), who made all the running in the race on Thursday, or nearly all of it, for he was in the lead tajae, snd then retired for h : s Itgblp companion, but Stromboli was unable to last out. Mr Clark will make a bold bid for the Derby and Cop with Bengal. Then we have S'eroohsaer, Zalineki, Strathmare, and others, to be teoi.or.sd with, so that although Oxide and Stromboli have shown us some form, the V. 8.0, blue pibjnd is very open,
