Ten negroes have been lynched in Arkansas for murdering a policeman. The United States cruiser Mohican has seized a British sealer, the Otto, carrying out her calling in the Behring Sea.
A serious fire has taken place at Halifax, Nova Scotia, resulting in the destruction of ten wharves and thirtyfive warehouses. The estimated damage is half a million dollars. Russia has presented Montenegro with a warship, and has supplied money for the construction of three others. The Bavarian Government propose to ask Parliament to sanction two millions credit for the construction of strategic railways. Seventeen persons have been arrested in Paris on charges of being connected with the trapping or enticing of domestic servants in France, or from Belgium, England, and the United States, for immoral purposes. Ten thousand miners and railway men have struck at Pittsburgh for an advance in wages. Moors attacked the Spanish Government in Morocco, but were repulsed after three hours’ fighting. The tenants having accepted Wm. Smith Barry's terms, New Tipperary presents quite a deserted appearance. The Economist considers that the increased production of wool may possibly have a permanent effect upon the market. The Orient Company’s steamer Oratava sunk a barge in the Thames, and narrowly escaped coming into collision with the Arawa. Mr Gladstone received an ovation on his arrival at Newcastle to take part in the proceedings of the National Liberal Federation. The conference between Canada and the United States on the question of reciprocity has been postponed owing to Mr Blaine’s ill-health. Mr Dillon has been served with a writ in bankruptcy in connection with the non-payment of bail, which was estreated after his escape to America. The New York Chamber of Commerce urges the repeal of the law compelling Government to purchase four and a half million ounces of silver monthly. A continental Unity Club has been established in the province of Ontario, its principal object being to advocate annexation to the United States. The New York World states _ that President Barillas’ fought the insurgents on Wednesday last 40 mi'es from the city, and it is reported that the President is journeying towards the coast in the hope of catching a steamer. The exhibition of the Holy Coat at Treves has been closed. Since the opening it is estimated that fully two million people inspected the exhibit. The opinion is gaining ground that the riots in China foreshadow a revolt against the present Tartar dynasty which occupies the throne. It is probable the foreign fleets will be reinforced to enable them to be prepared to adequately protect foreigners. One of the chorus girls engaged at the London Gaiety Theatre has committed suicide under circumstances which are alleged to be suspicious. The nature of the evidence adduced at the inquest has been kept quiet, but it is rumored that a very exalted personage is implicated. Speaking at Newcastle Mr Gladstone said he was prepared to advocate the readjustment of taxation, and would advance temperance. He asserted that the refusal to concede the demands of the Irish people would no longer be an oppression of a Government, but of one people oppressing another people. He cautioned workmen against fettering individual liberty. A London market cablegratn dated 2nd October, 1891, per N.Z. L. and M.A. Co. Tallow—Market has an upward tendency. Fine mutton tallow is worth 27s 6d per cwt. Good beef 26s 3d. Frozen meat—Mutton market unchanged. Beef market dull. Price of beef has declined per lb since last report. Quotations nominal.

A young whale, 32 feet in length, was stranded on Saturday'on the mud fiats, in the upper part of the harbor. It was captured by Walker Bros. The Auckland Journalists have refused to form a branch under the New Zealand Journalist Association’s constitution, but offered to 00 operate with journalists throughout New Zealand iu forming a constitution suited to this colony. Strong exception is taken to the action of a minority, in framing a constitution without consultation with the several centres. The Reeling was dead against the clause providing that five-eighths of the subscriptions should be sent to Wellington. The Northern Railway League, which is already a powerful and influential body, has adopted the following platform -(1) To stop the pillage of the North Trunk Railway loan before the balance is finally misappropriated, and dissipated. (2 )To insist on the immediate expenditure of the £65,000 voted for the extension of the tunnel, and further to where the Marton line diverges from Stratford, (3 ) Early next session, through connection with Taranaki via Stratford, the completion of the Rotorua railway at an expenditure Of £30,000, and when the urgent needs oi Auckland and Taranaki district*. (4,) To demand justice to the country districts in the matter of roads Where railways do not exist. SOUTHERN NEWS. Leet night. Donald McKenzie was killed while bush felling on his own property in Pobangatia, (a district about 30 miles from Palmerston), on Saturday. He was struck by a limb of a falling tree, and nnly lived 20 minutes. He was well known along the coast. He was 36 years old, and unmarried. There are no further developcments regarding the difficulty in connection with the Christchurch seat. Mr Eden George has lodged an amended protest, claiming the seat on the ground that the other nominations are invalid. The candidates are still addressing meetings, and the committees are working as if nothing had happened. Early this morning the body of a man named Thomas Atkinson was found lying near the kerbstone in Tuam street. Beside the body was a bag of bottles containing serated waters. Deceased was 60 years of age, and was employed in Colker’a aajra’ed factory. He ia auppoaed to have been going homeward, and that he fell off the footpath in the dark and the blow received accelerated death. Deceased was well known iu Napier.
