The Gisborne Standard AND COOK COUNTY GAZETTE Published every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday Morning.

Thursday, October 15, 1891. LOCAL MATTERS.

Be just and fear not; Let all the ends thou afca’st at be thy country’s, Thy God’s, and truth’s.

It is clear that if the East Coast district expects to be fairly dealt with in the matter of what little public expenditure there is available, resigning ourselves patiently to our lot will be of no service. Robust activity is required to bring matters under the notice of the Government, and all moral pressure used to ensure that they will be fairly dealt with. While an intimation has recently been received that the Government will proceed to make expensive fixings to indicate the bearings of our harbor—that they will do this in spite of any objection the Board may make, but at the cost of the Board, we have the spectacle of Taranaki being granted /■3OOO for dredging purposes, and other places that bring political influence to bear being rewarded by exceptional treatment. The colony has suffered much from that sort of thing, and we suppose it will prevail to the end of the chapter, and be varied slightly just as Governments come and go. In native land matters, too, we find that the district most affected in New Zealand is to have its requirements scurvily treated. One Judge, it seems, is to be expected to take in hand all the work that has accumulated and is accumulating in this wide district. The principle of stationary Judges is admirable, but it is ridiculous, unless under some greatly improved system of which we have no knowledge, to set one Judge to do work that must occupy him for years. It means that some who have already applications in will have to wait patiently for a long period before they can hope that their applications will be considered. Vigilance is required to secure justice being done to the district, and we hope that the Hon. W. P. Reeves will not be allowed to depart without having the various matters brought under his notice.
