CAULFIELD CUP. The above raee took place on Saturday, the result being— Woodford’s Gnaroo (Morrison) ... 1 Upjohn’s Forest King (McGowan) 2 McLaughlan’s Clonard (Harris) ... 3 —There also ran —Bungebah, Teksum, Tarcoola, Gresford, Enuc. Gladstone, Gatling, Mitre, Mikado IT., Dillon, Ronald, Lapstone, Dundas, Glenloth, Norbert, Burlesque, Knight of the Garter, Stamboul, Sadim, Aster, Albemarle, and. Portsea. Betting—2 to 1 against Bungebah, 5 to 1 Gnaroo, 8 to 1 Clonard, Dillon, and Glenloth, 12 to 1 Forest King, 25 to 1 Teksum, 33 to 1 Albemarle, 40 to 1 Sadim and the others. When the flag fell the field moved away to a fair start, Forest King being the first to show in front, from Mitre, Dundas, Gresford, and Glenloth. At the distance post Mitre supplanted Forest King, and passing the stand the first time Mitre held half a length’s lead from Glenloth, the pair being followed by Portsea, with Albemarle last As they left the straight the colors of Mitre and Portsea were conspicuous at the head of affairs, with Glenloth, Bungebah, Gresford, Gatling, and Dundas next, in that order. Then came Gladstone and Dillon. At the mile Mitre had taken command of the field, running just clear of Glenloth, but when the turn was reached Mitre and Sadim were racing neck and neck, with Lapstone, Gatling, Bungebah, and Gladstone being next. Here Gnaroo made a forward movement, and approaching the bend he had passed most of the field, and was on the quarter# of Mitre, with Teksum next, and then followed Dundas, Dillon, Clonard, and Forest King, in that order. Nearing the straight Tarcoola came with a rush, and he followed Gnaroo as they turned for home, with Dundas, Mitre, and Bungebah next. Gnaroo came out at the distance post, and it waa soon apparent that he held the others safe. Forest King made a desperate effort to get on terms with the son of St. Albs ns, but Morrison kept the latter going, and he passed the post a winner by a length from Forest King, who finished a nock in front of Clonard, Glenloth fourth, Dundas fifth, Tarcoola sixth, Aster seventh. Gatling eighth, Norbert ninth, with Bungebah and Ronald next. The rearmost division included Knight of the Garter, Teksum, Gresford, and Enuc. The time was 2 min. 86 secs.

WEDNESDAY’S RACING. As the convincing day will (in all pro bability) arrive to-morrow, and as there are many who like to know you know, a glance at the probabilities may be interesting. For the Maiden Plate there is a very even field, and all the owners think their chances good, but I shall plump for Stockfish, with Pekapu and Beauly to fill places. Spring Handicap: For this race there are seven acceptors, and I expect to see them all face the starter. Both the top weights will have a good following, and throughout favoritism seems pretty evenly divided. Thia event should settle many arguments. Fitzjames is a horse that will run a good race, but I doubt his ability to get the journey. Brigand appears more forward than anything in it, but as he has nover been asked to go the distance, and as 7st 91bs is a good weight to ask a small horse like him to carry, I doubt his ability to win. Zanzibar I have a great respect for. He has a nice racing weight, and the going ought to suit him well, Pouawa’s chance j don’t like. To sum up, my choice falls on Zanzibar to win, with Parsons* best and Brigand to fill places. Hurdle race: There are six acceptors, but with the exception of the two top weights they may be classed as hacks. I shall place them in the same order ss the handicapper—Qeo, Rusdine, Little Joe. Flying Handicap : Por this event nine have cried content, and Fan! heads the list with 9.7. He has a severe task before him to oa’ch the judge's eye first. Brigand oomes next with 8.4, and in this I like hie chance. Avis, 8.8, reads well, and should he be as fit as the last time he raced I would not look further for the winner. Pouaw# I do not think can on this trip gain fionbrt, anq Zanzibar will race better oyer * longef course. Papakura, with 78, is fairly treated, and should he race up to the form he showed in the same raee last year be will have a good say in the decision. Pekepu is one that bis party have great notions of, and his two performances in public should oause him not to be despised. I expect to see him run well up. Hexham is a horse the Gisborne publjq have never eeen race, and with his light impost I shall not be surprised if he upsets the pot. Oreeper is another importation, and will make hie first appearance here, but I do not think he can win. My final selection is Avis, Brigand, Paui, with Hexham as * boil over. The Hack Races will probably qauee big fields, and there are a lot bf dark ones in work by tfie different clever divisions, but it is wonderful how th# outsiders turn np when the clever one# have everything to win. Oto Sport. POVERTY BAY TROTTING CLUB. On Saturday night all the horses accented for the President's Handicap. Th# other acceptances are to be made on th# ground- The acceptances and entries thus stand 1— Prasidant's Handicap—Httrricsas 400yds behind >or, Spinner 200yds, Blue Msud 75rds, Emin Pasha, 75yds, Hakere 50yds, Dick sor, and Joker ear.
