In reply to a message sent by the Governor-General on the occasion of the Queen's birthday, His Excellency has received a telegram stating than Her Majesty was greatly pleased to receive the message and desires that an expression of her appreciation and grateful thanks may be conveyed to the Government and people of New Zealand. His Excellency the GovernorGeneral, Sir Charles Fergusson, and Lady Alice Fergusson, wul return to Wellington from Aucxiand on June 6. The Rev. H. Wnite has been appointed an honorary child welfare officer for the Dannevirke district. Mr. R. E. Champtaloup, touring manager of the Auckland Automobile Association, is on a visit to Hawke s Bay. y Mr. E. H. Barry, apiary instructor of the Huwke’s Bay branch of the Agricultural Department, has returned to Hastings after a visit to headquarters in Wellington. A London cable reports the death of Miss Edith O’Gorman Auffray, aged 86. She was well known in tfle late XIX. century as “The Escaped Nun Alued.” At the Farmers’ Union meeting held in Hastings yesterday, the president, Mr. J. H. Joll, was nominated for the electoral committee in connection with the approaching election of the Meat Producers’ Board.

At the annual meeting cf the parishioners of St. Matthew’s Church, Hastings, a motion was unanimously carried expressing the thanks of the meeting to Mrs E. G. Armstrong tor her devoted service to the church as assistant secretary. Dr. Roberta Jull, of Western Aus. tralia, who visited New Zealand a few years ago in connection with baby welfare, has been chosen as the woman representative on the Australian delegation to the Assembly of the League of Nations *u October of this year. Mr. F. R. Field, at the Hawke s Bay Farmers’ Union meeting in Hastings yesterday, was appointed to represent the branch at a conference between the H. B. Aero Club and the various local bodies concerned, to discuss ways and means for the establishment of a district aerodrome in the vicinity of Hastings. At the first meeting of the newlyelected committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club held on Wednesday i' was unanimously decided to elect ths veteran trainei' R. J. Mason a life member in recognition of his long association with the club and racing in New Zealand generally. This honour is held by only one ether membef of the club—Sir George Clifford. The Right Rev. Dr, WentworthShields, who has just announced his intention of resigning the Bishopric of Armidale (New South Wales > lias held the position since 1916. Bishop Wentworth-Shields was educated at St. Paul's School and London University. He graduated M.A. of the la’ter. and was ordained in 189*. lie was nreecntor of St. Saviour's Cathedral Goulbnrn. during 1901 nnd 1905. mid was archdeacon of Wagga from 1905 to 1910. Mr. Wentwoitb-ShicWs was warden of Bishop's College, Gonlhurn. from 1906 to 1916, nnd rector of St. James’s. Sydney, from 1910 to 1916. in which year he was consecrated Bishop of Armidale.
