RAILWAY CAPITAL

PROPOSED WRITING DOWN. MR COATES’S OPPOSITION. Opposition to the Government’s proposal to write down railway capital was expressed by the Leader of the Opposition (Right Hon. J. G. Coates) in the course of his speech in the House of Representatives last night. Mr Coates said that money invested in the railways was now going to be written off. A member: That is easy enough. Mr Coates: They say easy enough. What about our assets? “They don’t exist ” interjected a member. Mr Coates we at on to say that a sys tern of accounts had been introduced whereby it could be seen which line, paid and which did not. The Government, he considered, would be wrong if it intended to interfere with the accounts as they stood at present. The Government should bo cautious before starting to write down assets.
