It is officially announced that tho Governor-General, with Lady Bledisloe, will pay his first official visit to Auckland next week, arriving at Auckland on Tuesday morning and returning to Wellington the following Thursday The Governor-General presided- to-day at a meeting of the executive council.—(Press Association.)
Mr. P B. B. Nicholls, of tho British Foreign Office, who has been on loan to the New Zealand Government, is to leave New Zealand for England towards the end of next month. Mr. Nicholls was seconded by the Foreign Office for a two years’ term of duty in the Dominion, and that term is now about to expire. The arrangement under which Mr. Nicholls came to New Zealand was made by the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, when visiting London for the Imperial Conference in 1926.
The death has occurred at the Waipukurau Hospital of Mr Robert Henry Heatley, a well known Wallingford settler, at the age of 63 years.
Word has been received from the Rt. Hon J. G. Coates, that both he and Mrs Coates will be present at the H.B. and East Coast Aero Club's pageant in Hastings on April 5. During their stay in the district they will be the guest of Mr. and Mrs H. M. Campbell, at Horonui.
The King has approved tho appointment of Mr. Henry Chilton, Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the Holy See, to be ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary at Santiago. The elevation of status of the British representative in Chile from that of minister to that of ambassador was recently announced.
To have served in a campaign with Garibaldi, the Italian liberator, is one of the experiences of Captain William John Newby, of Grey Lynn, Auckland, who celebrated hie ninetyseventh birthday to-day. Captain Newby is a picturesque figure, and even to-day at his advanced age his memory still carries him back to the days when he fought In Italy as a lieutenant in the British Legion. Mrs. Newby, who is 90 years of age, enjoys the best of health. She and Captain Newby celebrated their diamond wedding in May, 1927.
The funeral of Mr. James Alexander, of Napier, took place at ths Parke Island Cemetery. The Rev. J. A. Asher conducted the burial service of the Presbyterian Church. The pail hearers were Messrs A. Robertson, W. Hogg F. C. Adams, and worshipful brothers A. Scheele. E. N. Bickerstaff and T. ’ R. Gifford. At ths gravpside the last Masonic rites were read by Worshipful Brother A. Scheele, Rt. Wor. Bro. Freedman and Bro. E. T. Dunn. Numerous floral tributes were laid on the mound, hearing testimony to the esteem '»• which, the deceased gentleman w«» held.
