It is officially announced at Cairo that the Prince of Wales will arrive there from the Sudan by air on the 17th inst. and will embark on a P. and O. liner at Port Said on the 20th.
A London cable reports the death of Dame Emma Albani, the Canadian born organist and harpist.
Mr. T. J. V. Donovan, of Hastings, has received advice that he was successful in passing the final subjects at the recent law examinations.
The engagement is announced of Mary (Molly) eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Griffin, of Otane, to Alexandria, only son of Mr. and Mrs, R. McHardy, of Elsthorpe.
Mr. G. Bridgman, chairman of the Ciive Grange School Committee, last evening informed the members of the committee that, for private reasons, he would not be seeking re-election this year. Members expressed regret at this decision saying it would be hard to replace such an excellent chairman
Mr. T, Sullivan the popular proprietor of the Settlers’ Arms Hotel, Tikokino, is leaving there at the end of the month to take over the lease of the Te Auto Hotel. Mr and Mrs. Jeffares, of Taradale, who are already well known and popular in Tikokino, will assume control of the Settlers’ Arms Hotel.
It was officially announced yesterday thaat the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. Sir Joseph Ward) is continuing to derive considerable benefit from the further treatment he is receiving at Rotorua. The expectation is that he will be able to walk in about a week’s time. No decision has been made as to when Sir Joseph will return to Wellington, although no change will be, considered until after tthe Easter holidays.
A copy of a telegram from the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs, London, to the GovernorGeneral of New Zealand dated April 2, 1930, is as follows“ The Earl of Balfour has asked me to convey an expression of his grateful thanks for the message of sympathy from the Government and people of New Zealand on the occasion of the death of his brother. The relations of the late Earl are deeply sensible of the appreciative nature of the message. (Sgd.) -Passfield.”
The death took place to-day at Dargaville of Mr. Thos, C. French, secretary of the Kaipara Hospital Board since its inception, and for many years representative of the Public Trustee and agent for tho State Fire Office. He was a resident of the district for nearly half a century, and is survived by a widow (who is the daughter of the late Mr. John Stallworthy, ex-M.P., and sister of the Minister of Health) and by a grown-up family of one son and four daughters.—(Press Association.)
The Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates. Leader of the Opposition, together with Mrs Coates, will arrive in Hastings by this evening’s mail train. Mr and Mrs Coates will be the guests of Mr and Mrs H. M. Campbell, Poukawa, during the week-end, and to-morrow will attend the pageant of the Hawke’s Bay and East Coast Aero Club, of which Mr Coates is patron. The Hon. J. G. Cobbe (Minister of Defence) will arrive in Napier tonight, and to-morrow will attend the annual pageant of the Hawke’s Bay and East Coast, Aero Club at Hastings. He will return to headquarters on Monday.
Members of the Hastings Courtr house staff met Senior-Sergeant J. Dempsey yesterday afternoon and bade him farewell on the eve. of his departure lor Wellington. In pre sentirtg Senior-Sergeant Dempsey with a handsome pocket-wallet, Mr. W M. Will, Clerk of the Court, said that Senior-Sergeant Dempsey had done much to preserve the cordiul relationship that had always existed between the Court staff and the police force. Though he had been in Hastings but two years, the SeniorSergeant had made himself very popular with the Court qtaff, who deeply regretted that a severance of friendship was to take place. Mr. J.
