LOCAL ’PLANES

MEET ROUGH WEATHER BUMPY TRIP TO GIBBORNE, SQUALLY WINDS CAUSE DELAY In order to assist the Gisborne Aero Club to establish a new registered aerodrome and to create increased enthusiasm tor flying, the H.B. and East Coast Aero Club sent three ’planes to Gisborne. Captain White, with Mr. B. M. Kessell as passenger, left on Friday last and landed at the Aerodrome one and a half hours later. On the way, they sighted Flying-Officer Olsen's and Captain Dudley Newbigin’s ’planes emerging from a black rain squall and they escorted them to the ’drome. The new arrivals had Mrs W. Richmond and Mr G. Field respectively as passengers. They reported having had a rough and bumpy trip. Squally weather was encountered in Gisborne, and the visitors, instead of leaving on Wednesday could not depart till 12.40 p.m. yesterday. Their stay was rendered pleasant however, by the hospitality of the Gisborne people, who did everything possible for them. The visitors gave a stunting exhibition and did what they could to assist the cause of aviation, though the weather was by no means suitable. The flyers returned in formation. Leaving the aerodrome, they skirted the bay, passed over Old Nick’s Head and the construction camps, over Waikokopu, Morere, Nuhaka and cut inland over Mohaka and the flat lands, passing Tutira Lake on the left. A straight line was then taken to Fernhill, where the ’planes turned and came on to Hastings, arriving at the Aerodrome at 2.30 p.m. No mishaps were experienced and few bumps. The clouds in parts were low but the ’planes managed to fly safely under them. The passengers arrived feeling rather cold, but otherwise none the worse for their experience. AUCKLAND’S AIRPORT. SITES RECOMMENDED. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, June 6. The City Council’s works committee, after long inquiry, has recommended three areas of land as being suitable sites for the Auckland municipal airport. The committee recommends that the whole district benefiting by the airport should share upkeep and control and that a body constituted similarly to harbour boards be set up to carry out the scheme.

The council deferred consideration of the committee’s recommendation.
