Mr. Charles Pattison was yesterday re-elected chairman of the Patangata County Council.
Mr and Mrs W, H. Rathbone, of Waipawa, leave to-morrow on a holiday trip to the South Sea Islands.
Mr. S. Woodham, of Wellington, who has been visiting his nephew, Mr. C. Carrell, of Hastings, returned home this morning.
A London cable reports the death of Mr George Harnett, a prominent Rugby figure. He managed the Anglo-Welsh tour of New Zealand in 1908.
Mr. A Schnack, of Christchurch, has been appointed judge of the solo competitions at the brass band contest to be held in Wellington early next year
Captain T. W. White, chief instructor of the Hawke’s Bay and East Coast Aero Club, leaves Hastings in the Club’s Spartan ’plane for Gisborne to-morrow, weather permitting. A London cable states that Captain Hugh Grosvenor, who was killed in an aeroplane smash at Melbourne on January 6th., left an estate of £138,000 to his parents.
A London cable reports the death of Sir William Allardyce, formerly a colonial officer. He saw service in the Pacific Islands and was Governor of Tasmania and other colonics. He was 69 years of age.
At to-day’s meeting of the Napier Harbour Board leave of absence was granted to Mr. J. J. Langridge who was reported by the chairman to be improving from his indisposition.
Mrs C. Bunker, of Hastings, accompanied by her mother. Mrs A. E. Collett, of Gisborne, left this morning for Wellington where she will bid farcwSll to Jier nephew, Mr. W. Collett, of Cisborne, who is leaving on a trip to the Home Country.
The Bev. H. A. Jones, Baptist missionary on furlough from Bengal, India, arrives in Hastings this afternoon by the mail train. During his short visit here he will be the guest of Mr and Mrs A. H. Partridge, of Pepper street, Hastings.
Constable S. Howell, who is leaving Napier to-day for Dannevirke, was met by members of the Napier police force last night and presented with a smoker’s stand for himself and a salad bowl for his wife. SeniorSergeant Stark made the presentation and spoke highly of Constable Howell's services.
Mr. R. J. Hobbs, of Christchurch, has been selected as manager of the New Zealand team for the Empire Games in Canada. Mr. Hobbs is very well known in sports circles in Christchurch and he is secretary of the Canterbury Rowing Association.
Flying-Officer E. G. Olsen, of the Hawke’s Bay and East Coast Aero Club, who has returned to Hastings after a short visit to Dannevirke, denies the unofficial report published yesterday that he will be leaving this month to take up duties as a commissioned officer of the New Zealand Air Force, at Soekburn.
The following members were present at the annual meeting of the Napier Harbour Board, held to-day: Messrs A. E. Jull (chairman), J. 11. Joll, G. C. Lowe, N, P. Eriksen, J. E. Jones, W. J. Lyon, P. Higgins, J. C. Bryant, P. W. Peters, G. McKay and H. Anderson.
Two appointments to the medical staff of the Auckland Hospital were made by the board yesterday. Dr. Morris Oxford, of Auckland, was selected from seven applicants to be surgical registrar, and Dr. Keith H. Holdgato, of Timaru, was appointed medical registrar, for which position there were six applicants.
