WATCHING EXPENSES

NAPIER COUNCILLOR WANTS COMPARATIVE RETURN. In order that councillors might have further information relative to the position of the Council’s finances, Cr. A. H. D. Mayne submitted the following at last night’s meeting of the Napier Borough Council:—“That a return be furnished monthly to the Mayor and councillors showing under various headings the expenditure for tho month as compared with the estimates fixed for the current year.” Cr. Mayne, speaking to tho motion, said that in the past councillors had not Known how tin* finances stood. They found at the end of last year that thev had a considerable debit without being aware of it and he felt that by the expenditure of a few pounds on clerical work they would bo able to save thousands of pounds. The system ho proposed was in operation in other centres and had also recently been adopted by the Hawke’s Bay Hospital Board, where it was giving satisfaction.
